Our church’s first core value is “Biblically Rooted.” We believe our lives are better when we are shaped and directed by God’s Word! One great way to sink your roots down into Scripture is by memorizing it. I know, I know…memorizing sounds like hard work and you’re not in school anymore! But trust us, the effort is worth it.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you work on memorizing a verse or passage:
- Repetition – One of the best ways to memorize Scripture is to take advantage of the power of repetition. As we say the verse over and over, our brains begin to shift it into our long-term memory. To help with this, put the card we handed out in worship somewhere you will see it regularly (refrigerator, desk, bathroom counter, etc.). Then, each time you see it, repeat the verse to yourself a few times. As another option, we’ll be sending out an electronic image of the verse in this week’s e-news. You can save that image to your phone, and maybe even save it as your lock screen so that you’ll see it regularly!
- Say it aloud – Another powerful memory device is to repeat the verse aloud. There is something about actually forming the sounds in your mouth that adds another layer to the memorization process. You get a sense for how the words feel coming out of your mouth, and it helps your brain remember it.
- Use a tool – There are lots of online options to help with Scripture memory. The Scripture Typer app (free) is one of our favorites. It’s available for iPhone or Android.
During the current teaching series, we’re encouraging every VRBCer to memorize one verse each week. Check them out below (and you might want to save these images to your phone to make it easy to review, or maybe even save it as your lockscreen so you’ll see it often!)
